Rolling With the Punches as an Entrepreneur

Hopefully you’ve never been literally punched, but if you’re an entrepreneur the answer is that metaphorically speaking, you know pain - riding high on victory one moment, picking yourself up off the floor the next.  As a mentor, I work with clients to overcome a variety of challenges, but many of the people I work with commonly struggle in three areas. They are issues that stem from a lack of support, a sense of purpose, and the ability to prioritize. Read on to learn the symptoms and some solutions for these issues common to today’s entrepreneur.

Dream Team

Business today is more challenging than ever before thanks to technology; there are innumerable sources available to us– Google, apps, blogs, online publications, Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, and more. But where should you turn when you need very specific and qualified advice about your particular situation? You need a support system of expert professionals. This could be a CPA, a financial advisor, an attorney, and even a spiritual mentor who ensures that your business and personal goals align. A true dream team is made up of people you consider to be amazing professionals and great friends that you trust to protect and guide you specifically.

Work With Purpose

Helen Keller said "True happiness... is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” Having a purpose helps us to get up off the floor faster when we’ve been hit – we are more resilient and have a greater capacity for stressful situations when we feel a part of something bigger. How do you find your purpose? It may seem elusive, but time, introspection and experience will lead to your passion. Think about situations in which you lose a sense of time, you’re "in the zone”, or could go on doing that activity, seemingly forever. These times give us clues about our unique purpose in the world, and they are times when we feel most fulfilled.

Prioritize Without Compromise

Many of us are also young, inexperienced and lacking resources. 54% of Gen Y have started businesses or aspire to [Bloomberg], while 40% of Gen X men and 25% of Gen X women are entrepreneurs or have plans to become entrepreneurs [Kaufman Foundation]. Even those of us who are older and wiser sometimes wish for 26 hours in the day.  Most entrepreneurs compensate for a crazy schedule by sacrificing "me” time, and then time with friends and family. This leads to loneliness, lack of fulfillment, being creatively tapped and a sense of being driven by obligation. A simple but powerful exercise is taking control with scheduling on a 24-hour grid. Block off sleep (you deserve the opportunity for a glorious, life changing 8 hours every night), at least one hour a day for a workout, pedicure, reading, or pursuing a passion project or hobby, followed by at least an hour daily for focused quality time with friends and family. You may need to occasionally reschedule, but never cancel – we call this "prioritize without compromise”. You and your family deserve it.

Get up off the floor

Owning a business can feel like a punch to the gut, but surrounding yourself with quality professionals to guide you, devoting time to discovering your purpose and prioritizing your time will give you the agility you need to duck and weave! And ultimately, set the foundation for success as an entrepreneur today!
