Brewer Removes Offensive Terms from State's Lexicon
Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill that takes the words "handicapped" and "disabled" out of the state's official lexicon. Those terms have been deemed offensive and the new law replaces those terms with "person or persons with disabilities".
Senate to Vote on Minimum Wage Increase Today
The Senate is likely to vote today (Wednesday, April 30) on a Democratic plan to gradually raise the $7.25 hourly minimum wage to $10.10 as soon as 2016. Republicans are expected to block it.
Whether it passes or not Democrats are hoping for a positive bump in November.
Nearly two-thirds of those earning $7.25 or less are women. Nearly half are people under age 25.
Even though both groups tend to vote Democratic, women don't automatically back Democrats. In 2010 they split their vote between the parties. And young people often don't bother voting in midterm elections.
Small Businesses are the New Crime Target
Even as large organizations continue making big headlines for data-breach events, small businesses and their customers are the new and emerging targets for data breach and ID theft.
A Recent Verizon report highlighted that 50 percent of all data breaches occurred at companies with fewer than 1,000 employees and 31 percent with fewer than 100 employees. Small businesses do not receive the same protections as consumers in ID theft cases.
Companies Being Rewarded for Healthy Worksites
Recent studies suggest that workplace health programs may lead to improved employee health, increased productivity and reduced costs for employers.
ASBA CEO Rick Murray says John C Lincoln Health Network, Yuma Regional Medical Center, and ATKINS North America are among the 25 businesses being recognized as a Healthy Arizona Worksite at the upcoming Arizona Small Biz Conference May 7th at the Scottsdale Princess.
"What we know is companies who have a wellness plan for their employees see greater productivity, than those who don't. Those companies have less sick days, less utilization of the health plan, and overall better health. We're excited to recognize these companies who have taken the initiative to implement this Arizona Healthy Wellness Plan." -Rick Murray
