ARIZONA LEADS SMALL BUSINESS JOB GROWTH

(Phoenix, May 4, 2011) – Today there is another sign that job growth will be created within Arizona’s small business sector.  Intuit has released its Small Business Employment Index which shows nationwide 60,000 jobs were added in April, resulting in a monthly growth rate of 0.3 percent.  Arizona outperformed the nation increasing 0.5 percent.

"Economists have been telling us small business is where the most significant job growth will occur, and our member businesses have been specific about what they need to emerge stronger out of the downturn: lower taxes, less regulation and increased access to capital,” says Donna Davis, CEO of ASBA.  "Arizona’s leadership has recently taken some necessary steps and ASBA continues to look for opportunities to help our small businesses overcome anemic sales, high taxes and skyrocketing costs such as healthcare.”

Additional surveys by the U.S. Small Business Administration show more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create 60-80 percent of new jobs in the country.  With 97% of Arizona businesses classified as small businesses, it is clear where job growth will occur.

"Small business employment is showing continued strength,” said Susan Woodward, the economist who worked with Intuit to create the Index. "Employment is up, hours worked are up, and total compensation per employee is up.”

Intuit’s Index data reflects monthly employment activity in small businesses, and is adjusted to account for changes in its online payroll customer base – an estimated 1,000 are in Arizona.  The percent change is measured monthly using the change in employment for existing Intuit Online Payroll customers from one month to the next.  Read more of the survey at http://bit.ly/smallbizindex.
