Focus: Don’t fret the ups and downs

By Donna Davis, for Inside Tucson Business | Posted: Friday, August 12, 2011 8:00 am

The debt ceiling debacle, credit rating downgrade and the impact on global markets are enough to make any entrepreneur cringe and hold tight to money.

While it's critical to keep attune to the economic roller coaster, it's just as important to not fret the current cycle. The key is what I like to refer to as "the f-word" around the office: focus.

Put your time and energy into generating sales and growing your customer base. Customers keep us in business, and possibly the best investment you can make right now is improving customer relations. Examine new opportunities and rethink the customer's experience with your unique brand.

The Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA) recently surveyed our 10,000 members statewide, and the results are optimistic about the overall business climate.

• 71 percent of respondents predict a better financial future a year from now; 23 percent say it will be about the same.

• 36 percent of employers say they plan to hire before the end of the year, of which 46 percent planned to do so within the third quarter.

I believe our small businesses will strive to meet these goals, and many will succeed - our entrepreneurs are resilient and resourceful.

ASBA is responding to the needs of its business members. We recently negotiated one of the best credit card processing rates in the nation. In fact, businesses with an average $50,000 monthly in processing should expect to see annual savings of between $6,000 and $100,000. It's just one of the benefits of our group buying power.

Representing 97-percent of business in the state, Arizona's small businesses fuel our economy. It is this very aggressive community of entrepreneurs, representing all industries in all stages of business development, which will ensure a prosperous future for our great state.

Persevering current economic times is an accomplishment for all of our small businesses - a testament to the tenacity of Arizonans.

While economists adjust their forecasts with the latest events, it has never been more important for our businesses to remain focused on renewed business growth and increasing sales and products in an effort to strengthen the greater Tucson, regional and state economies. ASBA is proud to be a part of the community and to be providing resources to help our small businesses succeed.
