CONGRESSWOMAN GABRIELLE GIFFORDS
NAMED NATIONAL ATHENA RECIPIENT
Award Will Be Presented At ATHENA Southern Arizona on September 22nd

(Tucson, August 16, 2011) – ATHENA International and the Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA) are pleased to announce U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been selected to receive the 2011 National ATHENA Award. The award is presented annually to an exceptional woman leader who demonstrates professional excellence, gives back to her community and assists other women in realizing their full leadership potential.

ATHENA International supports, honors and develops women leaders, and inspires women to reach their full potential. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords now joins a list of ATHENA honorees that includes Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; Nina Totenberg, legal affairs correspondent for National Public Radio; and Dr. Sally Ride, a former NASA astronaut. The award will be presented at a Tucson ceremony next month.

"There is no question that Congresswoman Giffords has been most courageous. Because of her spirit and grace she has inspired women across our nation to persevere in overcoming obstacles and reach their full leadership potential,” said ATHENA Founder Martha Mayhood Mertz.

"Congratulations to Gabby on this significant recognition, she is a most deserving recipient,” said Donna Davis, Chief Executive Officer of ASBA and a previous Phoenix ATHENA recipient. "In my interactions with Congresswoman Giffords, she has always been genuine, approachable and passionate about improving the environment for women to reach great achievements in business and their personal lives. In her own career, from running her family's tire company to becoming an Arizona state legislator and then United States Representative for the Eighth Congressional District for Arizona, she has demonstrated what we can each accomplish.”

"Congresswoman Giffords deeply appreciates this honor,” said Pia Carusone, Giffords’ chief of staff. "The congresswoman considers it her responsibility to help other women excel in their chosen fields, whether it is public service, private business, the non-profit world or raising a family. We know that many young women consider the congresswoman a role model and she takes that very seriously.”

ATHENA International, founded in 1982 and headquartered in Chicago, is a non-profit organization that partners with local communities to implement ATHENA leadership programs nationwide. In Tucson, the Arizona Small Business Association sponsors the ATHENA Southern Arizona awards, which will be presented on Thursday, September 22.

"Great courage and fortitude to inspire women everywhere – this is what ATHENA leaders represent,” says Dr. Dianne Dinkel, President and CEO of ATHENA International. "We are delighted to announce this honor, and pleased to present the award to Congresswoman Giffords in her hometown of Tucson.”

Congresswoman Giffords was seriously wounded at a Congress on Your Corner event in Northwest Tucson on January 8, 2011. Throughout her service to Arizona, she has encouraged women of all ages to strive for their full potential in life and career.

Congresswoman Giffords’ ATHENA National Award will be presented when the Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA) hosts the annual ATHENA Awards Luncheon on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Tucson’s Westin La Paloma Resort. In addition, ten finalists will be recognized and the 2011 ATHENA Recipient of Southern Arizona will be announced.
