Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has been named a National Athena Award winner.

Athena International, founded in 1982 and headquartered in Chicago, is a non-profit organization that partners with local organizations to implement its leadership programs nationwide. In Tucson, the Arizona Small Business Association sponsors the Athena Southern Arizona awards.

Giffords joins other top female leaders who have received the honor, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sally Ride, a former NASA astronaut.

Giffords is still recovering from a gunshot wound to her brain that occurred during a January shooting spree outside a Tucson Safeway that killed six persons including a young girl and federal judge. The shooter in that case, Jared Loughner, faces murder and attempted murder charges.

"There is no question that Congresswoman Giffords has been most courageous. Because of her spirit and grace she has inspired women across our nation to persevere in overcoming obstacles and reach their full leadership potential,” said Athena founder Martha Mayhood Mertz.

ASBA President and CEO Donna Davis is also a recipient of a Phoenix Athena award.

"Congratulations to Gabby on this significant recognition, she is a most deserving recipient,” Davis said.

"In my interactions with Congresswoman Giffords, she has always been genuine, approachable and passionate about improving the environment for women to reach great achievements in business and their personal lives.”

Pia Carusone, Giffords’ chief of staff, said the Congresswoman deeply appreciates this honor.

"The congresswoman considers it her responsibility to help other women excel in their chosen fields, whether it is public service, private business, the nonprofit world or raising a family. We know that many young women consider the congresswoman a role model and she takes that very seriously,” Carusone said.

As part of the awards, ASBA will host the annual Athena Awards Luncheon on Thursday, September 22, at Tucson’s Westin La Paloma Resort. Davis will help lead the event where both the national award and the southern Arizona recipient of the Athena Award will be formally presented.
