ASBA Business Mentoring Team

Develop and grow, both personally and professionally with ASBA's Business Mentoring Program

Our program includes 16 weeks of mentoring with one of our qualified mentors.  This mentoring could be one-to-one with the owner or his/her designee, or one-to-team, so the team is all on the same page.  When the program includes one-to-team, we do require a single point of contact, to ensure the mentor can keep things manageable.

Who is candidate for our services
?

  • ASBA small business members
  • Pre-startup (validating a business idea before you invest time or money)*
  • Startup companies (in business two years or less)
  • Small business (less than 50 employees)
  • Medium sized business (50+ employees)

An overview of the 16 weeks may include:

  • in-person meetings, but could be conducted over the phone or webinar for convenience
  • frequency will typically be weekly meetings, to keep things moving forward
  • duration is usually 60-90 minutes
  • location can vary and include your office, our office or in a public venue
  • homework is almost always assigned to the Mentee
  • guidance will be directed toward the goals of the Mentee


Through our strategic partnership with Houston Partners International, we utilize a behavioral assessment process referred to as TriMetrix.  This assessment helps candidates understand who they are, why they do things the way they do, and how to better relate to their teams, customers and vendors.  To learn more about the TriMetrix tool, visit HPI’s website here.

Most Mentees request assistance with the following business processes and tools:

  • accounting assistance
  • business plans
  • capital investment
  • communications plans
  • financial planning
  • hiring and personnel management
  • marketing plans
  • quickbooks assistance
  • sales process development
  • sales team development
  • start-up assistance

Select from 3 types of Mentoring


Entrepreneurial
- This is primarily the small business owner (s).  In a special few cases we might consider a COO or President of a business if they were actually running or going to take over a business.  We select from the full team of mentors.  This represents more than 90% of the assignments.


Executive - This is to assist senior level leaders (mostly C level) to develop personal, organizational and leadership traits and skills.  Normally this is not the owner of the business but someone the owner thinks very highly of and wants help with their development.  The owner / CEO has to agree with the mentoring.  You personally are an example of this type mentoring.  This represents a small percentage of the mentoring assignments.  We select from a small sub set of the mentors to handle these assignments since most of our mentors do not have true "executive" experience.


Emerging Professionals - This is to focus on employees who are upcoming and needing development.  In most cases these are not senior level leaders. The mentee's manager has to agree with the mentoring.  Several of your ASBA staff are an example of this type mentoring.  This represents a small percentage of the mentoring assignments.   We can select from the majority of the mentors to handle these assignments since all of them are experienced enough to provide development to these type people.
