Darth Vader’s dirty little secrets not-so-secret about stress – Day 5

April is Stress Awareness Month, and IT IS TIME for you to DEAL WITH your stress. Have you been seduced by the dark side of its force, pushing and pushing your way through deadlines and demands? Learn to recognize the prices you are paying for it and how to positively cope with stress, helping yourself live better. 

Throughout April, I will share a daily dirty little secret about stress and a tip to banish it. 

Day 5: 

In the face of stress, many of us do not get enough sleep, but not for lack of desire! You make every effort to go to bed, but still you toss and turn, wake up in the middle of the night, unable to shut your mind.

Sleep deprivation, i.e. when you experience more than one ‘bad’ night per week, is taking a toll on your physical, mental and emotional health. Sleep deprivation “should be taken very seriously” says Mark W. Mahowald, MD, a neurologist and director of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Rochester. Loss of sleep results in lack of focus, decrease productivity and impaired sustained attention, with adverse, occasionally disastrous consequences in the classroom, workplace, or the highways! 

Tip of the day: 

You may not have 7 or 8 hours of sleep every night, or you may think you don’t need that many hours, but your body and mind needs them (ref Sleep, your success partner). If you can’t catch up with sleep on one of your intergalactic trip aboard your Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor, then here is a little trick. 20 minutes of guided imagery or mediation is the equivalent of 2 hours sleep, allowing your body to repair itself and your mind to regain clarity.
