AAA Extends Roadside Coverage to Small Businesses

Small-business owners now can get AAA Arizona coverage for their companies similar to that provided to AAA individual and family members.

Last year, the motor club launched AAA Business Solutions, a product that offers business-to-business services for local companies. Coverage focuses on emergency roadside assistance but also covers vehicle and title registration, commercial insurance and CPR classes, among other services.

“That’s why we call it solutions — because there’s a lot of things we provide,” said Don Nunnari, vice president of automotive services.

Nunnari called AAA Business Solutions a “natural extension” of member services. Small businesses sometimes struggle in emergency situations because commercial vehicles require special equipment to replace a tire or tow. Without insurance, they would have to call around to determine who could get there the fastest.

Interest in the product has exploded since its inception because “there’s nothing like it,” Nunnari said. After initially serving 100 vehicles, the program has added more than 3,000 vehicles in 1 1/2 years, including 1,500 vehicles in 2015.

The goal for AAA Business Solutions is to have 20,000 vehicles registered, he said.

“(Companies) were finding that because they didn’t necessarily have a relationship anywhere, they were at the mercy of whoever would come,” Nunnari said. “They reported to us that they were waiting three hours in some cases.”

Small business owners can pay for the service in two ways: $199 a vehicle for a maximum of four calls a year, or registering the vehicle for a small fee and paying based on the service needs, Nunnari said. There is no minimum number of vehicles required to sign up.

Meanwhile, AAA Arizona is leveraging the 600 towing vehicles they already have available in the state, Nunnari said. The motor club has 880,000 members in Arizona and does more than 450,000 emergency calls a year, with an average response time of 30 minutes.

“If we can get to that service vehicle in 30 minutes and get them back on the road, they can go and do their call to (their customers),” Nunnari said.

The Business Solutions program’s most recent growth has been in an industry vital to the Valley: air conditioning repairs.

Trisha Kelly, co-owner of Parker and Sons, a heating, air conditioning and plumbing company, said her husband, Paul, heard about AAA Business Solutions at a networking meeting with other air conditioning companies. Since signing up, she said AAA Arizona has saved them time and money.

The Kellys use AAA Business Solutions for towing, fleet registrations and group membership, she said. The motor club offers discount rates for businesses to sign up their employees for car insurance, offering it as an employee benefit.

“The service has been wonderful,” Kelly said. Parker and Sons has registered only part of its fleet and hopes to have all 200 vehicles signed up soon, she said.

“They are very quick to respond to us when any of our field staff are stuck on the side of the road,” Kelly said.

“It’s nice to make sure they’re taken care of and can get back on the road — and out of the heat.”

AAA Arizona, the Arizona affiliate of AAA, was founded in 1927. The club's 500-plus employees operate 11 AAA offices and six AAA Auto Repair facilities in the Phoenix area, Tucson, and Prescott. The nonprofit provides roadside assistance, travel information and financial products and services.

AAA Arizona products

AAA Business Solutions, less than two years old, is one of a number of products offered by AAA Arizona outside of emergency assistance.

AAA Arizona offers its members vehicle and title registration at its branch locations as an alternative to waiting at Arizona Motor Vehicle Division offices. AAA also offers mobile glass repair and battery delivery.

One of its lesser-known services is online and in-person car buying aid. AAA does the shopping and brings the cars to local branches for test drives. A prospective buyer has no dealer interaction.

AAA Arizona also operates as a full-service global travel agency. Members can book vacations over the phone or in-person.
