Prepare Now- 2003 Windows Small Business Server End of Life

If you are a small business owner and are still running on Windows Server 2003, you are not alone. More than a decade after its introduction, millions of small businesses continue to operate on this trusted platform. Unfortunately, this means that there are a lot of business owners out there who are being forced to embrace change now that Microsoft has announced that it will end its support of Windows Server 2003 on July 14, 2015.

If the end of life for Windows Server 2003 affects your business, you don’t have to panic. However, you will have to make some crucial decisions – and you will have to act fast. The process of changing over can take up to seven months or longer.

What This Means

End of lifecycle for Windows Server 2003 means that any protections Microsoft has been offering for this platform will be eliminated. The dozens of security updates they provide annually, any access to the cloud – all of it- gone.

Fortunately, there are several fully-supported servers available to which you can upgrade, most notably Windows Server 2012. Here’s what else you will want to do, as soon as possible, in order to get started on the path to a safe, supported operating system:

Accept that an Investment is in Order

Whether you choose to migrate to a newer server or stay with the 2003 version, you can expect that the end of life for Windows Server 2003 is going to cost you some money – and the cheapest route isn’t necessarily the one you would think it is.

Your first instinct may be to take the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach and stick with your 2003 server. However, if you decide to do this, keep in mind that single incident help from Microsoft could cost in the ballpark of $60,000 to $200,000/year. If you store sensitive data, such as the type covered under HIPAA, you will have no choice but to migrate to a supported OS in order to stay compliant under the law.

Of course, you could throw caution to the wind and keep your trusty old server, sans support. This, however, is the costliest of all options as, without Microsoft’s frequent security patches and no cloud access (either through Microsoft or an outside vendor), you are putting all your data, infrastructure and, frankly, your entire business, at a very high risk.

Talk to a Managed Services Provider

There is no sugar-coating it: Planning for, and protecting, your soon-to-be unsupported data is a huge undertaking – even for a seasoned IT expert. There are important decisions to make and many time-consuming steps involved.

If you already have a contract with an MSP, sit down with them as soon as possible to work up a plan to start rolling your date onto a new server. If you don’t have an MSP to turn to, there probably won’t be a better time than now to speak with one. The investment in choosing the best server to support your business long-term – and getting your data moved over correctly – is well worth it.

Embrace Migration

Your best bet is to begin planning your migration to a newer Windows server immediately. While this can seem like a daunting task, it’s also a great opportunity to assess your technology approach, strengthen your infrastructure and modernize your systems.

Site Not Mobile-Friendly? Kiss Your Google Ranking Goodbye

Google's "Mobilegeddon" is heading your way: The search giant on Tuesday will update its algorithm to give preference to mobile-friendly sites for smartphone or tablet queries.

The change, announced in February, means websites not currently optimized for variously sized mobile devices will be buried under an avalanche of results, while mobile-friendly sites rocket to the top.

The switch threatens a number of sites owned by the European Union, the BBC, and Wikipedia, which failed Google's Mobile-Friendly Test developer tool, BBC News reported.

Similarly, mobile marketing firm Somo suggested famous faces like Versace, American Apparel, Dyson, David Beckham, Microsoft's Windows Phone site, and a handful of U.K.-based services aren't yet ready for the switch.

 

According to the test, mobile sites meet certain criteria like text size, amount of space between links, and whether content fits across a small screen. Take the Mobile-Friendly Test online; if you are unsuccessful, Google has some guidance.


"When it comes to search on mobile devices, users should get the most relevant and timely results, no matter if the information lives on mobile-friendly Web pages or apps," Google said in a February blog post announcing the update.

Meanwhile, Google last week announced it will no longer show URLs in mobile search results, and replace the domain name with real-world titles. Rather than URLs, Google will display what it calls "a breadcrumbs-like format."

Search "history of Google," for example, and you may find a green line of text reading "Google > about > company > history," or perhaps "Wikipedia > wiki > Google"— (above);a set of links akin to a trail of breadcrumbs.

 

"Well-structured URLs offer users a quick hint about the page topic and how the page fits within the website," software engineer Bartlomiej Niechwiej and product manager Rob Ennals wrote in a blog post.

The Googlers said this change will to help mobile searchers better understand websites. Because if the title link and brief summary aren't enough, you can now look to the green line in between to find more information.

Website developers and owners can indicate their preferred name, and provide more than one possible option, letting Google's algorithms choose between them.
