Business Education Foundation Receives $500 Walmart Foundation Community Grant

Posted By Nicole Shumate, Arizona Small Business Association, Thursday, June 9, 2016

ASBA is honored and excited to announce that the Business Education Foundation (BEF), a business related party to ASBA, has been awarded a $500 community grant from The Walmart Foundation.

The goal of the Business Education Foundation is to advance the spirit of entrepreneurism by engaging and strengthening small business in Arizona. By providing timely education, hands-on mentoring and necessary resources and assistance, the BEF helps cultivate business owners’ creative vision and helps to transform them into a solid financial future for business owners, their family, their future employees and ultimately, their community, for a stronger Arizona.

When asked what made ASBA the top recipient for the grant, Walmart store manager, Krissy Lujan, said “Your submission was unique and stood out to me.” She continued, “When choosing a recipient, I want to pick someone who benefits the community, someone who we haven’t helped before and someone that is in our community”.

Krissy expressed to ASBA that not only is it important to thoroughly review applications submitted, but that she strongly felt how important it was for Walmart to truly believe in the mission and values of those organizations awarded.

Rick Murray, ASBA CEO, expressed “ASBA’s mission is to be the statewide resource for small businesses in Arizona.  The BEF, in collaboration with ASBA, allows us to further educate small business owners, creating opportunities of success.  We are grateful that The Walmart Foundation continues to support our vision through partnership and individual store support.”

We look forward to taking the next step with this grant to educate, energize and empower entrepreneurs.

Scam Alert: "Annual Minutes" Mailers Target Small Businesses

SCAM ALERT: "Annual Minutes" Mailers Targeting Small Businesses Are Back in Arizona

PHOENIX – Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is warning consumers to be cautious of mailings that claim consumers owe money for an “Annual Minutes” or “Annual Corporate Minutes” requirement for their businesses. The Attorney General’s Office recently received complaints that such solicitations are again being mailed to small businesses in Arizona.

The mailers often include the words “notice” or “statement.”  They also provide an arbitrary deadline to respond. There may be a blank form, inside of the mailer, that asks the recipient to fill in the names of the officers and directors of its business.  The form may also seek other contact information, and then asks for a payment for $125 to $150 dollars.

Many consumers have been tricked into thinking they are filling out a mandatory form and returning it to a government agency.  The forms may look like legitimate government documents but they are not.  The forms are particularly misleading because corporations are required to file an Annual Report with the Arizona Corporation Commission and pay a fee.  However, annual reports for Arizona corporations are filed electronically with the Arizona Corporation Commission. The Commission does not mail a reminder that an annual report is due.
These mailers primarily affect “mom and pop” businesses, causing them to waste hard-earned money on a fictitious requirement that appears to come from a government agency.  After the fee is paid, the business will receive boilerplate “minutes” forms that provide little to no value.
AG Brnovich Offers the Following Consumer Tips:

  • Carefully read and review any mailers that appear to be government documents.
  • Annual reports for Arizona corporations are filed electronically with the Arizona Corporation Commission.  Businesses can sign up to receive email alerts from the Commission regarding their annual report.  The Commission does not currently mail a reminder that an annual report is coming due.
  • If you have questions regarding required filings for Arizona corporations, please contact the Arizona Corporation Commission at (602) 542-3026, or toll-free within Arizona at 1(800) 345-5819, or visit the Commission’s website at is external).

If you believe you have been a victim of consumer fraud, please contact the Attorney General’s Office in Phoenix at (602) 542-5763, in Tucson at (520) 628-6504, or outside the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas at 1(800) 352-8431.  Consumers can also file complaints online by visiting the Attorney General’s website at

LegalShield Provides Greater Access to Equal Justice and Paves the Way for the Future of Legal Services with New Products and Plans Announced at its 20th Annual Legal Provider Conference

Posted By Kenyatta Turner, LegalShield Independent Associate, Monday, May 9, 2016

LegalShield Provides Greater Access to Equal Justice and Paves the Way for the Future of Legal Services with New Products and Plans Announced at its 20th Annual Legal Provider Conference

  • Elevate by LegalShield conference hosted more than 120 leading attorneys from firms across the U.S. and Canada
  • Nearly 75 percent of individuals who have looked to hire an attorney in the past year used online resources at some point in the process
  • Seven new products, enhancements and legal plans announced

ADA, Okla. — May 4, 2016 — LegalShield, the original disrupter in the legal services industry, announced plans to roll out at least seven new and enhanced technology-based services and products to meet the needs of consumers and business owners in the sharing economy. The new line-up continues the legal services company’s commitment to providing equal access to equal justice for millions of North Americans. The announcement was made at Elevate by LegalShield, its 20th annual conference of more than 120 LegalShield lawyers from the U.S. and Canada.

"Forty-four years ago, LegalShield disrupted the legal industry by offering services at an affordable cost—creating a community of members and matching them to accountable and responsive law firms,” said Jeff Bell, CEO of LegalShield. “The costs of legal services are out of reach for most North Americans, and we are again reshaping the future of law services by putting a law firm in the palms of all citizens and our members with LegalShield mobile apps.”

Unlike its competitors who offer do-it-yourself (DIY) online legal services or a referral to a random lawyer, LegalShield offers the convenience of DIY technology with the assurance of a high-quality, full-service law firm. This is what customers want. A recent survey of 4,000 adult internet users by LexisNexis found that nearly 75 percent of those who have looked to hire an attorney in the past year used online resources at some point in the process.

The new products and services to be rolled out over the next 30 days and throughout 2016 include:

  • LegalShield App: The newly redesigned app provides LegalShield members instant access to their dedicated law firm and member perks discounts, and makes it easy to keep member’s information up to date. (June)
  • Snap by LegalShield: Available in the LegalShield App, the Snap feature allows members to take a picture of any traffic ticket and instantly send it to their dedicated law firm for resolution. (June)
  • Shake by LegalShield: Provides free forms to members that are backed up by dedicated law firms. (July)
  • Launch by LegalShield: Makes it easy to start businesses right by providing state-specific forms and dedicated attorney support in a one-stop shop. (August)
  • Ask by LegalShield: The Ask App is adding more free answers to the most commonly asked legal questions, with more than 1,500 questions answered in an easy to use app. (September)
  • Legal Plan for “gig economy” drivers: A legal plan that provides legal consultation and moving traffic violation coverage for individuals that drive their personal car for income-producing purposes. (October)
  • Enhance by LegalShield: Supporting law firms and lawyers by providing educational opportunities, technological resources and real lawyer ratings, including Net Promoter Scores (NPS) from clients. (November)

All LegalShield products and apps have an underlying goal of increasing ease of use and access to legal services and furthering understanding of consumer rights as it relates to the law. The new products and enhancements were spearheaded by Shake, an award-winning technology start-up company purchased by LegalShield in April of 2015.

“By combining the benefits of technology with practical advice from a trusted law firm at a reasonable cost, LegalShield is paving the way to greater legal access for millions of people,” added Abe Geiger, LegalShield vice president of product development and founder of Shake.

LegalShield is the only legal services provider that has a dedicated network of law firms and lawyers supporting its members. This unique attorney network provides a dedicated law firm in every state (except Alaska, which will be available by 2017) to directly service each LegalShield member. To ensure member satisfaction and quality, members are surveyed after every interaction with a lawyer and rate their experience using a NPS. The average NPS for LegalShield providers is 54, putting the company on par with companies like Apple and Nike.

“It took decades to build our network of attorneys—one firm at a time, one state at a time. The relationships we have with our providers and the commitment they have to helping our members is unparalleled,” said Bell. “And together, we are furthering our commitment by not only providing the best legal services, but the best technology to access legal help.”

About LegalShield is one of the nation’s leading providers of legal safeguards for individuals, families and small businesses. The company also offers one of the industry’s most affordable and comprehensive identity theft plans, IDShield. LegalShield plans provide protection to more than 3.7 million individuals, and IDShield provides identity monitoring and restoration services to more than one million individuals across North America. More than 34,000 companies offer the LegalShield and IDShield plans to their employees as a voluntary benefit.

For as low as $20 per month, LegalShield members get access to attorneys with an average of 19 years of experience in such areas as family matters, estate planning, financial and business issues, consumer protection, tax, real estate, benefits disputes and auto/driving issues. Unlike other legal plans or do-it-yourself websites, LegalShield has dedicated law firms in 49 states and four provinces in Canada that members can call for help without having to worry about high hourly rates. Contact: Suraya Bliss 580-665-9113
