Workplace Ergonomics

Posted By Tod Dennis, CopperPoint Mutual, SCF Arizona, Friday, July 1, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 27, 2016

Ergonomic injuries or musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), accounted for nearly 1/3 of all workplace injuries, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average time away from work it takes to recuperate is 11 days.

MSDs are linked to:

  • Repetitive tasks (frequent reaching, lifting, carrying)
  • Overuse of muscles
  • Awkward postures
  • Forceful exertions (carrying or lifting heavy loads)
  • Static posture (maintaining fixed positions when working)

Common MSD injuries and symptoms may include tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, reduced range of motion, loss of strength, pain and swelling or numbness and tingling.

To overcome MSDs, employers may want to consider “designing” the pain out of repeated tasks and aligning workplaces and work stations more closely with an employee’s physical capabilities.

For tips on how to design the pain away at a work station, you can contact CopperPoint’s Loss Control & Risk Management team for an evaluation, or order our Ergonomics safety card (LC-9415) off our website,

Heat Exhaustion in the Workplace

Posted By Tod Dennis, CopperPoint Mutual, SCF Arizona, Wednesday, June 29, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 27, 2016

The heat is on – Seriously! In June, it is almost commonplace for Arizona to be placed under an excessive heat warning for several days at a time.

When a worker experiences an excessive loss of water and salt and is sweating profusely, heat exhaustion is most likely why.

Among those most prone to heat exhaustion are employees who work in hot environments, who have high blood pressure or who are elderly.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Heavy sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dizziness, confusion
  • Clammy, moist skin
  • Pale or flushed complexion
  • Fast, shallow breathing
  • Extreme weakness or fatigue
  • Slightly elevated body temperature

The Arizona Department of Health Statistics reports it is not unusual during Arizona’s summer that individuals will die from excessive heat.

Employees working in hot environments should be trained in first-aid treatment on what to do should they spot a co-worker suffering the symptoms. These include:

Place them in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned area to rest.

Help them drink plenty of water or other cool, nonalcoholic or non-caffeinated beverage.

If possible, have them take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath.

For more information, order our “Sun Protection” injury prevention card (LC-9120) or the “Heat Exhaustion” card (LC-1009) from our website, Registered policyholders also have access to our safety video on heat safety.

ASP Dividend Timing Change

Posted By Tod Dennis, CopperPoint Mutual, SCF Arizona, Monday, June 27, 2016

Members of a CopperPoint’s Association Safety Program (ASP) who qualify for a safety dividend and a bonus safety dividend for participation in an ASP may see some changes beginning this year in their payments.

If the ASP member’s renewal date is the same as the association’s effective date – say Jan. 1 – then the member will receive a single check that combines the individual and the bonus dividend together.

However, if the member’s renewal date is different from the association’s effective date, the member will receive two checks. The policyholder’s earned safety dividend will be paid based on the policy renewal date, and if eligible for an association bonus dividend, the member will receive that check based on the association’s effective date.

Dividends are never guaranteed and are declared by the CopperPoint Mutual Insurance Company Board of Directors.
