Arizona Town Hall Seeks to Strengthen Arizona-Mexico Regional Cooperation

PHOENIX, Ariz. (May 18, 2017) – Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, P.L.C., in partnership with Arizona Town Hall, is pleased to host the inaugural Community Town Hall on May 25-26, 2017 at the Hotel Lucerna in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

The Community Town Hall event in Hermosillo was one of the recommendations issued from the 108th Arizona Town Hall. Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, a long-time supporter of Arizona Town Hall, is the premier sponsor of the event.

“The objective of the event is to bring diverse perspectives from both sides of the border to constructively discuss how to strengthen economic partnerships and cooperation between Arizona and Sonora for the betterment of the region as a whole,” states Patrick F Welch, an attorney at Jennings, Strouss & Salmon who, through his relationships and contacts in Hermosillo, has been instrumental in arranging the Community Town Hall.

The event will also include remarks from key leaders helping to shape state and national policy impacting this important relationship, including:

  • Rafael Fernandez de Castro, Department Head of International Studies at the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico
  • Karen Ogle, Consul General of the United States of America, Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico
  • Flor Ayala, Local Deputy, Congress of the State of Sonora
  • Ruben Gallego, Representative, Arizona District 7, U.S. House of Representatives.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, American goods and services trade with Mexico totaled an estimated $579.7 billion in 2016.  Mexico is currently the United States’ third largest goods trading partner with $525.1 billion in (two way) goods trade during 2016. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has been one of the main drivers for this economic growth as demonstrated by this substantial growth as compared to pre-NAFTA statistics. Arizona, because it borders Mexico, has been identified as one of the states that has benefitted the most from NAFTA.

According to the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, Mexico is Arizona’s number one trade partner, accounting for about 30% of all Arizona’s exports to foreign markets and 37% of all Arizona’s imports from foreign markets. Arizona exports to Mexico in 2016 totaled $8.32 billion, and primarily include manufacturing products and agricultural goods.

“As an attorney representing United States and Mexican-based companies and individuals involved in cross-border trade and investment between Arizona and Mexico, I have seen an uptick in inquiries for legal services relating cross-border activities,” states Welch. “The take away from these statistics and my personal experience is that economic trade and investment between Arizona and Mexico is of critical importance to Arizona’s economy and the Arizona-Sonora region as a whole.”  

The upcoming Community Town Hall in Hermosillo will provide an excellent opportunity for stakeholders involved in cross-border trade and investment between Arizona and Mexico to come together to explore how Arizona and Sonora can expand their vibrant economic partnership. It will also address opportunities and challenges raised by globalization. For example, what are the prospects for development of the Arizona-Sonora region as an important regional hub for international commerce? Participants may choose to discuss infrastructure needs, tax reforms, and other policies needed to make the most of the region’s competitiveness in the global marketplace. 

“Participants will discuss commercial trends that could influence the region, the impact of immigration and border security, and how Sonora and Arizona can serve as a template for a productive relationship between Mexico and the United States. These are just some of the important topics that participants will discuss at the Community Town Hall event in Hermosillo later this month,” states Tara Jackson, President of Arizona Town Hall. “Participants at this event will undoubtedly leave with a better understanding of the role we all play in supporting the important relationship between Arizona and Sonora, and how to help improve our regional and global competitiveness.”

Business Education Foundation Receives $500 Walmart Foundation Community Grant

ASBA is honored and excited to announce that the Business Education Foundation (BEF), a business related party to ASBA, has been awarded a $500 community grant from The Walmart Foundation.

The goal of the Business Education Foundation is to advance the spirit of entrepreneurism by engaging and strengthening small business in Arizona. By providing timely education, hands-on mentoring and necessary resources and assistance, the BEF helps cultivate business owners’ creative vision and helps to transform them into a solid financial future for business owners, their family, their future employees and ultimately, their community, for a stronger Arizona. 

When asked what made ASBA the top recipient for the grant, Walmart store manager, Krissy Lujan, said “Your submission was unique and stood out to me.” She continued, “When choosing a recipient, I want to pick someone who benefits the community, someone who we haven’t helped before and someone that is in our community”.

Krissy expressed to ASBA that not only is it important to thoroughly review applications submitted, but that she strongly felt how important it was for Walmart to truly believe in the mission and values of those organizations awarded. 

Rick Murray, ASBA CEO, expressed “ASBA’s mission is to be the statewide resource for small businesses in Arizona.  The BEF, in collaboration with ASBA, allows us to further educate small business owners, creating opportunities of success.  We are grateful that The Walmart Foundation continues to support our vision through partnership and individual store support.”

Scam Alert: "Annual Minutes" Mailers Target Small Businesses

SCAM ALERT: "Annual Minutes" Mailers Targeting Small Businesses Are Back in Arizona

PHOENIX – Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is warning consumers to be cautious of mailings that claim consumers owe money for an “Annual Minutes” or “Annual Corporate Minutes” requirement for their businesses. The Attorney General’s Office recently received complaints that such solicitations are again being mailed to small businesses in Arizona.

The mailers often include the words “notice” or “statement.”  They also provide an arbitrary deadline to respond. There may be a blank form, inside of the mailer, that asks the recipient to fill in the names of the officers and directors of its business.  The form may also seek other contact information, and then asks for a payment for $125 to $150 dollars.

Many consumers have been tricked into thinking they are filling out a mandatory form and returning it to a government agency.  The forms may look like legitimate government documents but they are not.  The forms are particularly misleading because corporations are required to file an Annual Report with the Arizona Corporation Commission and pay a fee.  However, annual reports for Arizona corporations are filed electronically with the Arizona Corporation Commission. The Commission does not mail a reminder that an annual report is due.
 
These mailers primarily affect “mom and pop” businesses, causing them to waste hard-earned money on a fictitious requirement that appears to come from a government agency.  After the fee is paid, the business will receive boilerplate “minutes” forms that provide little to no value.
 
AG Brnovich Offers the Following Consumer Tips:

  • Carefully read and review any mailers that appear to be government documents.
  • Annual reports for Arizona corporations are filed electronically with the Arizona Corporation Commission.  Businesses can sign up to receive email alerts from the Commission regarding their annual report.  The Commission does not currently mail a reminder that an annual report is coming due.
  • If you have questions regarding required filings for Arizona corporations, please contact the Arizona Corporation Commission at (602) 542-3026, or toll-free within Arizona at 1(800) 345-5819, or visit the Commission’s website at https://www.azcc.gov(link is external).

If you believe you have been a victim of consumer fraud, please contact the Attorney General’s Office in Phoenix at (602) 542-5763, in Tucson at (520) 628-6504, or outside the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas at 1(800) 352-8431.  Consumers can also file complaints online by visiting the Attorney General’s website at https://www.azag.gov/complaints/consumer.

ASBA Hosts Free Event in Downtown Phoenix for Business Owners

 

Phoenix, AZ –The Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA), in collaboration with the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, Networking Phoenix, and The Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host the AZ Small Biz CollaborMIX™ on May 24th, in recognition of Small Business Month.  This will be the second event of the month ASBA has hosted in dedication to the small businesses of Arizona, providing an opportunity for business owners to network and make valuable connections.    

On May 5th, over 400 business owners attended the AZ Small Biz Con, hosted by ASBA.  ASBA is eager to continue the momentum with the AZ Small Biz CollaborMIX™ & Expo on May 24th.  The AZ Small Biz CollaborMIX™ & Expo will be hosted in the heart of Phoenix’s urban-chic Warehouse District at Warehouse 215 @ Bentley Projects.  ASBA expects to have 60 exhibit booths and more than 300 attendees.

 

“After an overly successful AZ Small Biz Con on May 5th, we are seeing a lot of enthusiasm surrounding the upcoming mixer,” quotes Rick Murray, ASBA CEO.  “As the statewide resource dedicated to small business, we love providing opportunities for growth and seeing the excitement from small business owners.”
