PHOENIX, Ariz. –June 7, 2013 – The Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA) strongly believes that Arizona lies at the center of the federal immigration debate and has much at stake with the policies that will bring immigration reform to a successful conclusion. While Congress begins to debate the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, S.744, ASBA is pleased to release its following position statement on immigration reform:

Position Statement on Immigration Reform

There is growing consensus that our federal immigration system is in immediate need of reform. The Arizona Small Business Association recognizes that our immigration system is inadequate and a comprehensive approach to reform is essential. Such reform is imperative for Arizona and our nation to meet our current and future workforce needs and to remain competitive in the global economy.

The Arizona Small Business Association supports legislative policy that:

· Is comprehensive and developed by the Federal Government.

· Includes a reliable and efficient employee verification system for domestic workers that will prevent identity theft and not hold employers liable for database errors.

· Creates a process to admit foreign workers to support our nation’s workforce needs while protecting American workers from displacement.

· Strengthens our borders and national security while supporting trade and economic development through the continued expansion of our ports of entry.

The Arizona Small Business Association believes that these federal policies can mend our current immigration system and will result in providing relief to American businesses and encourage job creation.

"We applaud Congress for confronting and working to achieve meaningful reform to our failing immigration system that is in much need of reform,” said Rick Murray, CEO of ASBA. "Lack of reform has placed a larger burden on Arizona than most other states because of our physical border with Mexico.” ASBA believes that Arizona is poised to expand its economy and further escalate its economic development opportunities with sensible immigration policies that properly address the current challenges confronted by Arizona businesses and its workforce.
