(Phoenix, February 3, 2011) - Results of three surveys out this week suggest small businesses are feeling more optimistic about their business outlook, are beginning to add jobs, and are looking for government to focus on small business’ needs. Today, the National Small Business Association (NSBA) released a year-end economic report that shows a slowing of cuts to jobs and revenue and projects better revenues over the next twelve months. Data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks Phoenix fourth in the country in terms of raw job growth for adding 33,100 jobs between December 2009 and December 2010. Respondents to an Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA) survey this week overwhelmingly suggest a critical focus must be on small business.

"Small business is where economists predict the most significant job growth to occur this year, and our member businesses are specific about what they need to emerge stronger out of the downturn: lower taxes, less regulation and increased access to capital,” says Donna Davis, CEO of ASBA. "Arizona has incredible opportunity if we can help our small businesses overcome anemic sales, high taxes and skyrocketing costs such as healthcare.”

NSBA found similar concerns in its survey across all industry in every state of the nation.
· The number of small businesses impacted by the credit crunch is 75 percent – the lowest it has been in two years.
· One fourth of small businesses held off on hiring a new employee due to rising health insurance costs.
· Although 25 percent project employment increases in the coming 12 months, the number of small business owners projecting no change in employment is at its highest point in nearly three years.
Initial results of ASBA’s survey show small business owners are looking to state and federal elected officials to reduce corporate, sales and property taxes, and the capital gains tax. Davis shared the results this week with the Arizona Senate’s Commerce and Energy Committee, promising to continue providing feedback from its nearly 5,000 member businesses.

Networking, business match-making and educational opportunities provided to ASBA members exist today to assist small business owners rebound and emerge stronger. Learn more about ASBA member benefits at <> or by calling the ASBA Phoenix or Tucson offices at 602.306.4000 or 520.327.0222.
